PTSD

(Post-traumatic Stress Disorder)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has a wide array of causes. Either directly experiencing or witnessing an accident, violence (including sexual violence), or other intensely negative events can leave a powerful role on the psyche. Symptoms of PTSD include insomnia or nightmares, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, or preoccupation with the event(s). For some people, these symptoms improve with time, but it is also perfectly normal to struggle with trauma for years or even decades after the event took place. For this reason, therapy can be of help at any stage of the healing process.

How Can Therapy Help?

There are a variety of therapeutic modalities that can be of help to someone experiencing PTSD. A pioneering treatment known as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has shown great potential in helping patients make peace with traumatic memories. Other methods like CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) can help the patient identify specific negative thoughts and emotions, and then learn strategies to cope.
